We are also fortunate enough to be able to source the best available fruits from Kumala growers dotted all over the five main regions of South Africa’s wine-producing land. Our growers’ vineyards are located all over the Western Cape from Olifants River, through Paarl and Stellenbosch to Worcester.

Collaborating closely with our winemaking team, our growers quietly wait, watch and work the individual grape varietals to ensure they benefit from the right amount of sunshine and water before getting picked at the optimum. After all, quality winemaking is something that just cannot be rushed.

Juan Slabbert – Winemaking Manager

Juan was born in the small town of Robertson in the heart of the Cape Winelands. He studied Viticulture at Elsenburg Agricultural College and only after his first crush at Graham Beck Wines decided to become a winemaker.

After graduating in Oenology, he joined Nuy Winery in 2003 as Winemaker/Viticulturist. In 2009 he joined Stellenbosch Hills as Senior Winemaker and in August 2016 he became part of the Accolade Wines SA team.

During his career, Juan also had stints in California (Dry Creek Vineyard), France (Les Costieres De Pomerols) and Germany (ZGM).

It is Juan’s flawless focus on our pared-back approach to winemaking that ensures the Kumala range of numerous varietals and blends from South Africa remain consistent, are bold and Kolourful to match our brand.

Juan, and his wife Elsje, are very proud of their young family (Tomas aged 8 and Isa aged 6). They like to spend time in the outdoors. Juan’s hobbies include trail running, golf, cricket & tennis.
